Blind Assessment

Crisply sweet, fruit- and spice-toned. Apricot, oak, baker’s chocolate, freesia, sandalwood in aroma and cup. Deeply sweet structure with a tart lift and lively acidity; satiny-smooth mouthfeel. The finish centers around crisp stone fruit and aromatic wood notes, with a hint of spicy flowers underneath.

Notes

This coffee tied for the third-highest rating in a cupping of Hawai’i-grown coffees for Coffee Review’s May 2019 tasting report. Ka’u is an emerging Hawai’i coffee-growing district centered approximately 30 miles southeast of the famous Kona region. This 100% Ka’u coffee was developed by Lorie Obra of Rusty’s, one of Ka’u’s best-known and most celebrated farms. Produced from trees of the traditional Typica variety and processed by the honey method, which means that the outer skin is removed as it is in the wet or “washed” process, but at least some of the sticky fruit residue is allowed to dry on the bean and later removed by machine along with the parchment skin. Bottom Line

Richly floral and cleanly fruit-toned, an impressive and increasingly familiar style of natural- and honey-processed coffee from Ka’u producers.
